Rehabilitation at home: we give you tips!

Rehabilitation: regaining strength and recovering. For example after a knee operation, a hip operation, after illness or any other surgery. In general, rehabilitation always takes place under the supervision of a medical professional, such as a physiotherapist. You can also, in consultation with a specialist, rehabilitate at home. This can help you to recover faster. In a previous blog, we showed you what you should pay attention to when you are looking for fitness equipment to rehabilitate at home.

In this blog, we will give you tips that will help you with your rehabilitation.

1. Get to know your body

It is important to know your own body well before you start your rehabilitation. Listen to your body and try to find out what it can do and where your limits are.

2. Find your limits

And sometimes (in moderation) exceed it. Of course all this in consultation with your treating specialist and/or physiotherapist. To realise growth and development during your rehabilitation, your body needs stimuli. This can also mean that you have to do more than you think you can. When you put too little strain on your body, you will not make much progress.

3. Take your time

Because rehabilitation takes time. Try to avoid getting into a mindset where you only want to be back at your old level as soon as possible. The bigger the disappointment when it takes you a bit longer. Your physiotherapist can usually give you an estimate of how long you need to rehabilitate before you reach a certain level, but don't hold on to that.

4. Keep a (realistic) goal in mind

Rehabilitation is not easy; it takes time and goes with ups and downs. If you know what you are doing it for, it will help you to keep going through the rehabilitation process.

5. Build up gradually

Rehabilitation is a marathon, not a sprint. Build up to your final goal in small steps. Would you like to be able to squat 80 kilos again? It is better to start with (for example) 5 kilos and build up with 5 kilos until you reach your goal, instead of asking too much of your body by starting with big weights. That usually only has the opposite effect, causing you to have to rehabilitate even longer.

6. Listen to your treating specialist or your physiotherapist

Because really, he really does know better. No matter how seemingly easy your exercise is, or how small your progress seems, your physical therapist really knows best what is right for you. Don't go changing your exercises, increasing frequencies or weights on your own, always consult your doctor or physiotherapist.

7. Choose the right equipment

Are you giving your rehab an extra boost by also rehabbing at home? Pay attention when buying or renting fitness equipment for your home rehabilitation. Choose equipment with a low entry level, adjustable resistance and speed and make sure the equipment is ergonomic and has a good adjustable seating position. In this blog you will read exactly what you need to pay attention to when choosing fitness equipment for rehabilitation at home.
